The National Forum of Kano Indigene Lawyers has strongly criticized the recent ban on Sallah Durbar festivities across the four Kano Emirates, describing the action as a violation of cultural and human rights enshrined in both national and international laws.
Speaking to journalists in Kano after submitting an open letter to the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, the group’s leader, Barrister Usman Imam Tudun Wazirchi, acknowledged the efforts of security agencies in maintaining relative peace during the Sallah period. However, he condemned the decision to prohibit Durbar celebrations, labeling it “a denial of cultural rights and a suppression of historical identity.”
The group also opposed what they described as an attempt by the police to implicate the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, in a recent palace incident that led to the death of a palace vigilante. Wazirchi noted that although the Inspector-General of Police has since withdrawn the invitation extended to the Emir, any further attempts to undermine the traditional institution of the Hausa-Fulani people would be firmly resisted.
“We commend the security efforts during Sallah,” Wazirchi said. “However, the blanket ban on Durbar festivities contradicts the people’s cultural freedoms, including their rights to religion, expression, and celebration of heritage.”
According to the group, the Durbar is more than a festive tradition—it is a cultural and historical expression involving royal horse-riding processions that are protected under Nigerian law and international human rights instruments such as the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
They also hinted at political undertones behind the ban, suggesting it may be an attempt to suppress Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II. “This resembles political victimization, especially when similar Durbar celebrations were permitted in other, more volatile parts of the country,” the letter stated.
The lawyers called on security agencies to respect cultural rights and ensure equitable treatment of all regions, warning that isolating Kano in such matters could weaken national unity and diminish historical pride.
