A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, has described recent defections from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as inconsequential, labelling the defectors as “political scavengers.”
Dr. Pearse, who served as a member of the Atiku Abubakar 2023 Presidential Campaign Committee and also convenes the Reset Lagos PDP group, made the remarks while addressing journalists at a press conference held in Ikeja on Monday.
His comments came in response to the defection of PDP’s State Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Hakeem Amode, and several other party members to the APC.
According to Pearse, the departure of these individuals poses no threat to the stability of the PDP in Lagos. He noted that many of the defectors were closely aligned with Abdul-Azeez Adediran (popularly known as Jandor), who had earlier left the party.
“These individuals were never truly committed to the PDP since Jandor’s entry. All they’ve done now is make their stance official,” Pearse said.
He dismissed their political weight, stating that their influence within the party had always been minimal.
“What political value do Jandor and his allies hold? In the last election, they barely managed five percent of the votes. The idea that their defection means the PDP structure in Lagos has collapsed is laughable,” he added.
Pearse maintained that only a small, unreliable faction of the PDP has left, describing their departure as a welcome development.
“Let’s be honest — five percent of unstable elements are gone. It’s better they left now than cause problems ahead of the 2027 elections. Their absence is a relief, not a loss,” he said.
He concluded by saying that their defection would ultimately strengthen the party.
“By walking away, these political scavengers are helping us cleanse and rebuild the party for 2027,” Pearse asserted.
