A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) has filed a formal petition against activist and 2023 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, accusing him of cyberbullying, misinformation, and character assassination.
The group submitted their complaints to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and relevant media regulatory bodies, urging them to publicly dissociate from what they described as Sowore’s “toxic tactics,” warning that continued silence would amount to complicity.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the Independent Public Service and Accountability Watch, in conjunction with other allied CSOs, condemned Sowore for allegedly using his media platform to peddle falsehoods and incite public distrust, all under the pretense of activism.
“What began as a promising voice of dissent has now descended into a toxic cocktail of arrogance, misinformation, and deliberate blackmail,” said Adeniran Taiwo, spokesperson for the coalition.
The CSOs expressed concern over what they termed a pattern of digital intimidation and manipulation targeted at individuals and institutions, claiming that Sowore’s form of activism was nothing short of “digital terrorism in disguise.”
According to the group, Sowore’s platform is being wielded as a tool for personal vendettas rather than objective journalism or nation-building. They accused him of attempting to indoctrinate Nigerian youth with anti-patriotic narratives.
“He has made a career out of malicious blackmail, continuously painting Nigeria as a failed state to serve a chaos-driven agenda,” Taiwo stated.
The coalition urged regulatory and media oversight bodies to investigate the activist’s conduct and to issue public statements distancing themselves from his methods.
They concluded with a strong warning to government authorities: failure to hold Sowore accountable could embolden others to misuse digital freedoms under the guise of civic engagement and activism.
