Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has raised the alarm over the ongoing killings in the state, describing the violence as genocidal and warning that disunity among the people is fueling the crisis.
Speaking on Monday at an expanded emergency stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Rayfield, Jos, the governor called on all Plateau residents to rise above ethnic, political, and religious divides to confront the deepening insecurity.
“Our greatest challenge is disunity,” Governor Mutfwang declared, emphasizing that the continued fragmentation among Plateau’s people has emboldened those responsible for the unrelenting attacks on communities.
“The enemies of Plateau will only be defeated when we come together as one,” he added.
Tracing the roots of the insecurity, Mutfwang pointed to the tenure of former Governor Joshua Dariye, noting that the state has been grappling with violence for over two decades.
“From the time of Governor Dariye till today, we have had killings. President Obasanjo even declared a state of emergency in Plateau. Commissions of inquiry were set up, but nothing changed,” he recalled.
He expressed concern over the devastating impact of the violence on agriculture, with farmlands now abandoned due to fear of attacks.
“This is not just about attacks; it’s about the survival of our people. What is happening is nothing short of genocide,” the governor warned.
Governor Mutfwang urged all stakeholders — including former governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organizations — to set aside differences and unite in seeking lasting peace for Plateau.
