President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a peace support mission following an attempted takeover of government in the neighbouring country.
The President made the request in a letter presented to lawmakers on Tuesday by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary.
Tinubu explained that his request is in line with Section Five, Subsection Five, Part Two of the 1999 Constitution as amended, and comes after consultations with the National Defence Council.
According to the letter, the Government of Benin Republic reached out to Nigeria for urgent military assistance, specifically asking for immediate air support from the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Tinubu stated that Benin is currently contending with an attempted unlawful change of government which has created instability and threatened its democratic structures. He added that the situation demands a prompt and coordinated response to prevent further deterioration.
The President further noted that Nigeria and Benin share deep cultural and historical bonds, and that principles of collective security within ECOWAS require member states to support one another during times of crisis. He therefore urged the Senate to grant swift approval for the deployment.
The request is expected to receive detailed deliberation in the coming days.
