The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has come under pressure to arraign its former Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, over multiple allegations of corruption.
This demand was made by the Coalition of Activists Against Corruption in Nigeria (CAACIN) in a statement released on Thursday. The statement, signed by the group’s spokesperson, Comrade Ahmed Aliyu, also called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to release the findings of its months-long investigation into Bawa.
“It is inconceivable to detain a man of his stature for five months without substantial grounds,” Aliyu said. “We call on the DSS to make their findings public. Both the EFCC and the DSS were aware of the numerous corruption allegations against Bawa. These serious concerns must not be swept under the rug.”
The coalition further demanded that the EFCC purge individuals appointed by Bawa to “cleanse the institution,” urging immediate action to restore public confidence in the anti-graft agency.
Bawa was suspended by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023—just two weeks into his administration—and was taken into custody by the DSS the same day. He was detained at the DSS headquarters, known as Yellow House, for 134 days, with no public disclosure of the outcome of the investigation.
