Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has claimed he is aware of alleged plans to arrest him but insists he will not flee Nigeria.
El-Rufai, who has been at odds with some members of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, said the alleged threats are attempts to force him into self-imposed exile.
The rift escalated after El-Rufai publicly criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for what he described as deviating from its core values.
Responding to a social media post on Tuesday, El-Rufai, who is currently in Egypt, confirmed that he would return to Nigeria before February 20.
“I will spend more time in Nigeria than ever before,” he said.
“They have sent messages of intimidation and threats through my friends, family, and political associates because they want me to go on self-imposed exile. But silence is no longer golden. Inaction is not an option”.
El-Rufai noted that he had been arrested and detained three times in the past for criticizing previous governments and was not afraid of history repeating itself.
“The arrest, detention, and torture of political opponents are nothing new. But there is always a morning after. Life continues. As for death, it comes only when Allah wills it”.
He further revealed his plans to return for the launch of former President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoirs on February 20.
“For those who can’t sleep well whenever I’m in Nigeria, take note, I will be back in time for the launch of President IBB’s memoirs, In Sha Allah”.
El-Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been one of Tinubu’s most vocal critics in recent months.
Although he was initially nominated for a ministerial role, the Senate withheld his confirmation in August 2023, citing security concerns.
Despite growing tensions, El-Rufai remains defiant, stating, We depend on no one but Allah. We fear no mortal but Almighty Allah. We always hope for the best but prepare for the worst”.
