The Federal Government, aviation sector unions and airline operators on Wednesday reached a set of resolutions aimed at resolving lingering tensions in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The agreement followed an emergency meeting convened by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in response to recent disruptions that affected operations at the Abuja and Lagos airports.
The meeting served as a follow-up to earlier engagements with the unions and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) after the temporary suspension of industrial action on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. The goal was to restore cooperation and stability across the sector.
According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mahmud Adam Kambari, the parties agreed on steps to address outstanding financial obligations between airlines and aviation agencies.
Under the resolutions, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and heads of other aviation agencies will obtain payment schedules from airlines. These schedules will take into account airlines’ operational costs and prevailing economic conditions. Directors of finance and accounts in the agencies are expected to meet individual airlines within one week to finalise realistic repayment plans.
The meeting also addressed workers’ rights regarding union membership. Keyamo affirmed that employees retain the right to decide independently whether to join a union, free from interference by airline management.
The NCAA was directed to ensure unions have direct access to airline staff for the distribution of membership forms so that workers can make their choices freely. Keyamo warned that any airline that blocks such access would face sanctions from the NCAA.
The parties agreed to reconvene in one month to review progress and assess the status of the issues discussed.
Keyamo assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to a safe, efficient and sustainable aviation sector. He also reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s support for peace, safety and growth in the industry.
