The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has launched a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing the alarming rates of maternal and child mortality in Kebbi State.
The plan was introduced at a five-day workshop held in Birnin Kebbi under the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII).
Speaking at the event, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, who represented the ministry, disclosed that Kebbi currently records the highest maternal mortality rate in Nigeria. She listed 11 local government areas—including Fakai, Suru, Argungu, Augie, Sakaba, Shanga, Koko/Besse, Bagudo, Arewa, Dandi, and Danko Wasagu—as high-priority zones in urgent need of intervention.
She further noted that Nigeria ranks third globally in maternal mortality, with Kebbi State contributing significantly to the national figures.
The workshop gathered over 110 stakeholders, including representatives from government agencies, NGOs, health institutions, traditional and religious leaders, and the media. The goal was to craft a tailored action plan that addresses the unique challenges of maternal and neonatal health in the state.
Governor Nasir Idris, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Yunusa Ismail, reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to collaborate fully with the federal government to save lives and improve healthcare outcomes.
Reacting to the initiative, a participant, Nasiru Fakai, described it as timely and essential, offering Kebbi State a vital opportunity to reverse its troubling maternal and child mortality trends.
