Former Senator Ayo Arise has dragged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to court, seeking judicial determination on whether the party complied with its own guidelines during the senatorial primary for Ekiti North Senatorial District.
Arise, who contested the APC ticket for the district, alleged that the primary process was marred by irregularities and failed to adhere to the party’s established rules. He filed the suit immediately after the exercise, citing provisions of the Electoral Act to avoid the case becoming statute-barred.
In an interview in Ado-Ekiti, the former lawmaker maintained that he emerged victorious in the primary and expressed confidence that the court would uphold his mandate.
“I went ahead and filed my case in court because I knew what was coming,” Arise said. “That is why I was not surprised when my name was omitted. This is not just about me; it is about ensuring that we have a system that works for everybody.”
He explained that many aspirants were misled into believing only the national leadership of the party could declare the winner, contrary to the APC guidelines which clearly outline the procedure for announcing results.
Arise further claimed that despite submitting complaints and supporting evidence during the party’s appeal process, his petition was ignored.
“My name was omitted. I wasn’t cleared despite presenting my complaints and evidence during the appeal process. For anyone not to see what happened, it must have been deliberate. There appeared to be a written script,” he added.
The legal action, according to Arise, is aimed at compelling political parties to respect their own rules and strengthen internal democracy within the APC.
