Laolu Akande, former spokesman to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has criticized Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara for failing to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in court.
Speaking on Channels Television, Akande argued that Fubara should not have waited for seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to take the matter to the Supreme Court but should have taken legal action himself. He described the move as unconstitutional, emphasizing that an elected president cannot unilaterally suspend an elected governor.
“It’s commendable that PDP governors have stepped in, but I’m surprised Governor Fubara is just sitting back. If something like this had happened to Bola Tinubu when he was governor of Lagos, do you know how he would have reacted?” Akande said.
He insisted that Fubara should have immediately gone to court to challenge the suspension, asserting that he remains the legitimate governor.
“The first thing he should have done was to seek legal redress. He should have told his people that what happened in Rivers State is illegal, but he lacked the courage,” Akande added.
“How can a sitting governor allow an elected president to tell him to step aside? I would comply to avoid chaos, but I would go straight to court. I would also tell my people, ‘You elected me, but the president has asked me to leave. This is wrong, and I will fight it.’ That is how democracy is built—not just by people wearing Agbada.”
