Brice Oligui Nguema, Gabon’s transitional president and former military general who took power in a 2023 coup, has won the country’s presidential election by a wide margin, securing 90.35% of the vote, according to provisional results from the Ministry of Interior.
The announcement, made late Saturday by Foreign Minister Hermann Immongault, confirmed Nguema’s formal ascension to the presidency, with 575,222 votes cast in his favor. His nearest challenger, former Prime Minister Alain Claude Billie-by-Nze, received only 3.02%, raising serious questions about the integrity of the electoral process.
Nguema’s rise to power began on August 30, 2023, when he led a military coup that ousted President Ali Bongo Ondimba, ending the Bongo family’s five-decade rule. The coup occurred just minutes after Bongo was declared the winner of a controversial third term. The military swiftly annulled the results and placed Bongo under house arrest, citing widespread corruption and institutional dysfunction.
Although Nguema initially pledged a transition to civilian rule, critics argue that the election was heavily tilted in favor of the ruling junta. Allegations of voter suppression, restricted access for independent observers, and a lack of transparency have further fueled doubts about the legitimacy of the vote.
Supporters hail Nguema as a stabilizing force and a national savior, but opponents warn that Gabon could be witnessing the consolidation of military rule under a democratic facade.
