Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has revealed that his decision to appoint more women into public offices was largely influenced by the persistent advocacy of his late wife, Mrs. Patience Eno, who strongly championed 40% women inclusion in governance.
Since assuming office, Governor Eno has appointed a significant number of women, particularly at the local government level, while also implementing pro-women policies across the state.
Speaking at Ibom Hall, Uyo, during the first anniversary celebration of the Golden Initiative for All (GIFA), his late wife’s pet project, the governor acknowledged her role in shaping his administration’s commitment to gender inclusivity.
Governor Eno praised Lady Helen Eno Obareki, his daughter and Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, for continuing her mother’s s legacy through GIFA. He commended her efforts in enhancing family life and supporting the less privileged, describing her as a worthy torchbearer of her mother’s vision.
“Let me congratulate my dear daughter, Noble Lady Helen Obareki, for stepping up and taking charge of this great initiative. Your efforts over the past year have been remarkable, and the impact has been deeply felt. Your mother, and indeed all of us, are immensely proud of you.”
Reflecting on his late wife’s advocacy, Governor Eno admitted that many of the women in his administration owe their appointments to her influence.
“I vividly recall the First Lady’s persistent appeals for 40% women inclusion in government affairs. Most of the women appointed to public office today are a testament to her unwavering commitment to gender equality.”
The event not only celebrated GIFA’s achievements but also served as a moment to honor the memory of Mrs. Patience Eno, whose passion for women empowerment and social development continues to shape governance in Akwa Ibom State.
