Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has issued a bold call for northern Nigerian politicians to publicly apologize to the people for years of neglect and failure that have left the region grappling with deep-rooted underdevelopment.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV, Governor Sani expressed grave concern over the state of affairs in northern Nigeria. He attributed the region’s socio-economic challenges to over two decades of poor leadership, mismanagement, and systemic failure by those entrusted with political power.
“These issues didn’t start today,” Sani said. “They are the result of over 20 years of persistent neglect. We all need to look at ourselves in the mirror and apologize to the people of northern Nigeria. We let them down.”
The governor, who previously served as a senator, acknowledged his own role within the political system and said the responsibility for the region’s stagnation must be collectively borne by past and present leaders from the North.
Sani particularly emphasized the troubling levels of poverty and financial exclusion in the region. Drawing on his experience as the former chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, he noted that despite extensive federal spending on social intervention programs during the Buhari administration, the majority of northern Nigerians remained excluded from economic opportunities.
“Seventy percent of people in the North, especially the poor, are still financially excluded,” he stated. “This is a major reason the region continues to struggle economically.”
Governor Sani also defended the right of citizens to criticize the government but urged that such criticism be principled and rooted in a genuine desire to see progress.
“I welcome honest criticism,” he said, citing public figures like Dan Bello Galadanchi as examples of voices who speak with integrity. “But I take issue with those who contributed to the region’s decline and are now pretending to be reformers. That’s hypocrisy.”
Governor Sani’s remarks have sparked conversations across the country, with many commending his candidness and call for accountability in the face of long-standing challenges in northern Nigeria.
