Armed men abducted several National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members on Wednesday along the Aloma-Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State. Police confirmed the rescue of 11 victims on Friday.
The corps members were travelling from the NYSC orientation camp in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State when the attackers struck. According to a statement by Kogi State Police Command spokesperson Saliu Afusat, security operatives launched a rescue operation immediately after receiving a distress call.
Afusat said the operation recovered 11 abducted people, including the drivers of the two buses involved. Preliminary debriefing indicated that most of those rescued were NYSC members travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja.
The incident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. around Ogene Zaria, near the Ogene Zaria/Onicha-Igo Junction. Armed men emerged from the bush, blocked two buses travelling in opposite directions and abducted some passengers.
The Divisional Police Officer in Ofu led a joint security team to the scene. Officers recovered two abandoned vehicles: a Peace Mass Transit white Hummer bus and a yellow 18-seater bus. A coordinated bush-combing and rescue operation followed, resulting in the recovery of the 11 victims.
The rescued individuals were debriefed and, after necessary procedures, allowed to continue their journey. Police did not disclose the exact number of people abducted. Efforts to determine how many NYSC members may still be held remain ongoing.
Afusat said the police and other security agencies have deployed every available operational and intelligence resource to locate and free any remaining victims and to arrest the attackers.
