Gunmen suspected to be assassins on Wednesday killed a prominent Anambra lawyer, Barr. Ifeanyi Iloakasi, and his client while they were returning from a court session.
Iloakasi, who also served as the President-General of the Aguleri community in Anambra East Local Government Area, was ambushed at the Nanka/Agulu boundary in Orumba North LGA. He was shot dead alongside his client, who had attempted to flee the scene but was pursued and also killed.
The attack, which took place near Egbebelu village in Nanka, is believed by many to be a targeted assassination. Sources say the lawyer had recently secured the release of a murder suspect from custody, a legal victory that may have provoked opposition.
Police have confirmed the incident, with Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, visiting the crime scene on Thursday morning. According to the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary investigations suggest that the victims were trailed and intercepted by armed men riding a motorcycle.
“One of the victims survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital,” Ikenga said. “The survivor has been debriefed and has provided valuable information to aid ongoing investigations.”
The red Toyota Camry driven by the lawyer was recovered from the scene, and the bodies of the deceased have been identified by their families.
CP Orutugu has ordered a thorough investigation and deployed tactical and intelligence units to track down the perpetrators.
“The command is committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” Ikenga added.
