The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has identified low salaries and weak ethical standards among public officials as key factors driving corruption in Nigeria.
ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Aliyu, made this known during a meeting with the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Northern Zone, attended by media executives from across the 19 Northern states.
During his address, Dr. Aliyu highlighted the commission’s recent achievements, including the recovery of 20 billion from ghost workers and pension fraud schemes. He emphasized that inadequate wages often push salary earners into corrupt practices, making it imperative to address remuneration and strengthen institutional integrity.
He also urged journalists to uphold professional ethics, fact-check their reports, and resist any form of compromise in their work. Additionally, he called for media collaboration in exposing financial crimes and addressing cases of sexual harassment in both public and private institutions.
The Deputy President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and Director of News at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Husseina Akila, stressed the importance of a stronger partnership between the ICPC and the media to enhance the commission’s effectiveness in tackling corruption.
Similarly, Abdullateef Abubakar, Editor-in-Chief of Solace Base, Kano, and veteran journalist Gbenga Aruleba, called on the ICPC to intensify preventive measures against the mismanagement of public funds, particularly in constituency projects.
Other editors and media executives at the meeting praised Dr. Musa Aliyu’s leadership, commending his commitment to fighting corruption since assuming office.
