The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) has called on Justice James Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja to ensure fairness and impartiality in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who faces terrorism charges filed by the Federal Government.
In a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday, AVID, along with two other pro-Biafra groups—the Rising Sun and the Ambassadors for Self-Determination—expressed concerns over Kanu’s ongoing prosecution. They highlighted his extradition from Kenya, his continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS), and previous court rulings that have not been implemented.
The statement, signed by AVID President Dr. Sylvester Onyia, Rising Sun President Chief Dede Maxwell, and Ambassadors for Self-Determination President Chief Engr. Evans Nwankwo, asserted that Kanu should not be on trial, referring to him as a “prisoner of conscience.” They cited a 2022 United Nations Human Rights Council opinion, which recommended Kanu’s immediate release and compensation. They also referenced a 2023 Supreme Court ruling that found the revocation of Kanu’s bail unlawful.
The groups criticized what they described as a lack of adherence to legal decisions regarding Kanu’s case and urged the judiciary to uphold the rule of law. They further warned Justice Omotosho to ensure Kanu’s safety and avoid any actions that could be perceived as unjust.
Kanu is scheduled to appear before Justice Omotosho on Friday, March 21, for arraignment on terrorism charges.
