The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered that, moving forward, no officer should be seen carrying assault weapons (rifles) while dressed in plain clothes.
Additionally, he issued a firm warning to all personnel regarding serious violations of human rights, stressing the Force’s responsibility to safeguard these rights.
During a virtual meeting held yesterday with senior police officials, Egbetokun expressed disapproval of such misconduct, citing numerous complaints received through the Force’s grievance channels.
According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, the meeting aimed to strengthen operational discipline and improve management within the Nigeria Police Force.
He stated: “In this crucial session, the IGP addressed several urgent matters to reinforce the ethical and professional standards expected of police officers nationwide.”
The IGP made it clear that any act infringing on human rights will not be condoned and will result in strict disciplinary action.
He also cautioned all tactical units against abuse of authority and improper dressing, underscoring the need for officers to appear in the designated uniforms for their respective squads. No officer should be seen carrying assault weapons while in civilian clothing.
All tactical teams are required to adhere to established protocols and wear the correct uniforms assigned to their unit.
Furthermore, the IGP prohibited the unauthorized reassignment of cases without his written approval, as such practices impose unnecessary hardship on involved parties and cause delays in justice.
He concluded by instructing all ranks to work together to eliminate any irresponsible behavior that could damage the Force’s reputation.
