In response to recent attacks allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen in parts of Imo State, including the aftermath of the Benue incident, several communities in Owerri West Local Government Area have taken proactive steps to safeguard their lives and property by establishing local vigilante groups.
One of the communities leading the charge is Orogwe in Umunoha, Owerri West LGA, which recently inaugurated a 12-member vigilante team. During the inauguration, the immediate past President-General of the Orogwe Community Development Union, Pastor Jerry Atuzie, said the move became necessary due to the rising insecurity in the area.
“Given the current security situation, it became imperative for us to establish a community-based security outfit to protect our people,” Atuzie stated.
He commended the new team for passing the screening process and urged them to maintain discipline and avoid misconduct.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable members of the community, including the Chairman of the Ubah Welfare Union, Felix Oguzie, who cautioned the vigilante members against abusing their positions for personal gain.
