The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State, highlighting the escalating violence, rampant kidnappings, and persistent banditry that have made life increasingly perilous for residents.
In a statement released by its Chairman, Salihu Suleiman, NAN emphasized the gravity of the situation, pointing to the failure of local governance and the urgent need for a coordinated federal response. The Chairman expressed concern over the recent surge in violence, noting that armed groups have become bolder, launching organized attacks on villages, displacing families, and instilling widespread fear in the population.
Suleiman stated that while federal troops initially made progress in combating banditry, those early successes now seem distant, overshadowed by the ongoing violence. “The statistics are alarming—thousands displaced, countless lives lost, and communities shattered. The psychological impact on the people of Zamfara is profound, with families living in constant fear, children unable to attend school, and local economies crippled,” he said.
He further underscored that the security crisis has evolved into a full-blown humanitarian disaster, demanding immediate and decisive intervention. At the center of this crisis, according to NAN, is the apparent inaction of the state government, led by Governor Dauda Lawal Dare.
The statement criticized the governor for what it described as a lack of preparedness to confront the bandits and for failing to prioritize the security and well-being of the people. “Rather than focusing on the security of Zamfara citizens, the governor appears more concerned with misappropriating public funds. This neglect has worsened the security situation and eroded public confidence in the government’s ability to safeguard its citizens,” the statement noted.
NAN expressed deep concern over the failure of the state government to provide leadership during this crisis, leaving the people of Zamfara vulnerable to violence and fear. The group urged the state leadership to prioritize security, but questioned the administration’s capacity to do so effectively.
In light of the worsening situation, NAN called for a state of emergency, urging the federal government to take swift action. A state of emergency, according to the statement, would facilitate the deployment of federal resources, including military and law enforcement personnel, to restore order and protect vulnerable communities.
The statement emphasized that federal intervention is critical when local governance fails to provide security and stability. It noted that a coordinated federal response involving military, police, and humanitarian agencies is essential to quell the violence and offer vital support to affected communities.
Declaring a state of emergency, NAN concluded, would signal to the people of Zamfara that their suffering has not been overlooked, and reaffirm the federal government’s commitment to protecting its citizens and restoring peace to a region that has endured prolonged hardship.
