The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has refuted claims linking it to the ongoing insecurity in Imo State, insisting that it is being wrongly accused despite emerging evidence supporting its innocence.
In a statement issued by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said a viral video has further vindicated its long-standing position. The video features an individual identified as “Gentle Yahoo,” who allegedly admitted to participating in criminal activities in the state while implicating other unnamed actors with vested interests.
According to the group, the individual’s confession highlights efforts to falsely associate IPOB, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, with the region’s insecurity.
“We, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, categorically state that we are not responsible for the insecurity, kidnappings, or any form of criminal activity in Imo State,” the statement read.
IPOB reiterated that its mission remains peaceful and focused solely on advocating for the self-determination of the Biafran people. It also called on the public and media to avoid making premature conclusions without thorough investigation.
“We urge responsible media outlets and institutions to critically examine claims before linking IPOB or ESN to security challenges in the Southeast,” the group said.
The group further emphasized the need for transparency and accountability from those in authority and encouraged residents of Imo State to demand justice and clarity regarding the root causes of the ongoing unrest.
