Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a human rights activist and lawyer to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has cautioned the South East against any move to boycott the 2027 general elections, describing such a step as counter-productive and a risk to hard-won peace in the region.
Ejiofor issued the warning in response to a call by an Igbo group based in the United States. The group, which he said is backed by certain irredentists, is demanding an election boycott unless the appeal against the life sentence imposed on IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu is listed and heard as a precondition for holding elections in Nigeria.
In a statement, Ejiofor insisted that Ndigbo must reject any effort to treat participation in elections as an offence against the collective interest of the people. He argued that directives framed as civil disobedience or principled protest carry risks far greater than their promoters may acknowledge.
He stated: “Any directive advocating an electoral boycott, under whatever guise or euphemism it may be presented, must be unequivocally rejected. We must not permit the reopening of wounds that have taken enormous sacrifices to heal.”
Ejiofor stressed that the intervention was not about politics but about protecting Ala-Igbo, its people, livelihoods and peace. He condemned directives aimed at inducing a boycott, especially those issued without clear accountability to those who would bear the consequences.
He further noted the irony of surrendering political voice in the name of defending the people, only for the resulting silence to weaken their collective interests. Legitimate constitutional, judicial, political and democratic channels remain available for addressing grievances, he said.
Ejiofor recalled the high human and economic cost the region has already paid when political grievances turned into rigid commands that ordinary people ultimately suffered. He said Ala-Igbo is no longer available for experiments with destructive political theories and that communities, the economy and future generations have endured enough.
Patriotism, he argued, cannot mean deliberately weakening one’s own people, nor can resistance justify destroying the region’s economic foundation. A people preserve their homeland by protecting its peace, strengthening institutions and pursuing justice through lawful means, not by rendering it ungovernable.
Ejiofor called on those who claim to love Ala-Igbo to demonstrate it by safeguarding peace, listening to the people, and abandoning any strategy that would again make the region collateral damage in political absolutism. He urged the rejection of every attempt to measure loyalty or patriotism by willingness to boycott elections.
