The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on Igbos to remain vigilant and prepared for self-defense following the recent killing of several Northern hunters in Uromi, Edo State.
In a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group warned the Hausa community to avoid being drawn into ethnic conflicts that could escalate tensions. Powerful accused certain Arewa groups of inciting violence against Igbos and Christians in retaliation for the Edo killings.
“The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) cautions Arewa groups and their leaders, who are allegedly instigating attacks on Igbos and Christians. Such actions must stop immediately,” the statement read.
According to IPOB, intelligence reports indicate that some individuals in the North are already threatening Igbos in response to the incident. The group claimed that Fulani criminals had recently killed an Igbo man, Uche Abagana, in Kofa Ruwa, Kano, as a form of reprisal.
“Over the years, Igbos in the North have suffered the worst consequences of ethnic conflicts. We urge indigenous Northerners to exercise caution and not allow themselves to be manipulated by Fulani elements, who have historically been responsible for insecurity in the region,” the statement continued.
IPOB emphasized that if the victims of the Edo attack were indeed Hausa hunters, the blame should be placed on Fulani kidnappers and terrorists, whose actions have made Hausas targets of mob violence in some areas. The group maintained that the Indigenous Hausa community has traditionally coexisted peacefully with other ethnic groups, but Fulani activities have blurred the distinction between the two.
The group called on Igbos in the North to remain security-conscious, adhere to the law, and be ready to defend themselves if necessary. They also urged Igbos in the Southeast to remain on high alert.
“Self-defense is a fundamental right. Ndigbo will not stand idly by while their lives and properties are put at risk. The Nigerian government has consistently failed to protect indigenous Nigerians, prioritizing Fulani interests instead,” IPOB stated.
Finally, the group reiterated its stance on Nigeria’s structure, arguing that the country was created by British imperialists for their own benefit, not for the well-being of any ethnic group. IPOB called on all indigenous groups to unite in dismantling what it described as an artificial colonial structure to allow for self-determined, prosperous nations.
