The Ijaw People’s Development Initiative (IPDI) has called on the Federal Government to hand over power to the military, arguing that Nigeria is no longer operating a functional democratic system.
Speaking in Warri on Wednesday, IPDI National President, Comrade Austin Ozobo, said the current democratic structure has failed Nigerians and is plagued by deep-rooted corruption, insecurity, and weak leadership.
“Democracy in Nigeria has failed in all its ramifications,” Ozobo declared. “The country is overwhelmed by kidnappings, corruption, and banditry, yet the government lacks the political will to address these challenges.”
He alleged that the rise in banditry and killings, particularly in Northern Nigeria, is politically motivated and has been allowed to fester under civilian rule.
Ozobo pointed to Mali as an example of a country that has embraced military governance to restore order, adding that Nigeria may require similar intervention to stabilize and set the nation on a new course.
“The Senate has become a rubber stamp, unable to advocate for the people,” he continued. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is driving the country deeper into debt. We already owe ₦144.86 trillion, and now the government is proposing to borrow an additional ₦36.15 trillion.”
He concluded that what Nigeria needs now is decisive leadership, even if it comes through military rule, to reset the nation’s trajectory.
