In a dramatic turn of events, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Mbano/Etiti Branch successfully conducted its Branch election on Saturday, 5 July 2025, following a court-ordered rescheduling from its original date of June 28, 2025.
The election, which saw K.C. Nwaokorie emerge as Chairman, Juliet Ijeoma Kester-Duru (formerly Juliet Nwaiwu) as Vice Chairman, and Ifeanyi Chukwuocha as Secretary, was preceded by a legal battle that gripped the attention of the legal community in Imo State.
The election was initially postponed due to a suit filed by Mrs. Chisara W. Egwim Chima, a chairmanship contestant who was disqualified following a petition by her opponent, K.C. Nwaokorie. The petition alleged that Mrs. Egwim Chima, who had previously served as Treasurer and Vice Chairman consecutively, violated the NBA Uniform Bye-Law, which mandates a five-year waiting period before holding another position after serving two consecutive roles.Mrs. Egwim Chima, having served only two years since her last position, was deemed ineligible.
In response, Mrs. Egwim Chima filed a suit, HMI/40/2025: Chisara W. Egwim Chima vs. NBA Mbano/Etiti Branch & 5 Ors, leading to a court order restraining the branch from holding the election on 28 June 2025.
The matter was subsequently resolved through the intervention of elders of the Bar, who facilitated an agreement allowing Mrs. Egwim Chima to contest the election.
On 4 July 2025, the court issued a new order permitting the election to proceed the following day. The election on 5 July 2025, saw a robust contest, with K.C. Nwaokorie securing the chairmanship, while Juliet Ijeoma Kester-Duru and Ifeanyi Chukwuocha won the positions of Vice Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
