The Labour Party (LP) in Cross River State has reacted to the recent defection of key members, describing their departure as both a relief and a blessing in disguise.
In a statement issued by the State Chairman of the party, Patriarch Ogar Osim, the party criticized Hon. Ekpenyong Akiba, current member representing Odukpani/Calabar Municipal Federal Constituency, and Hon. Daniel Asuquo, former member for Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency, labeling them as “ungrateful” for leaving the platform that once propelled them to political prominence.
Osim likened the duo to the biblical Jonah, stating, “They were like Jonah in the boat while they were in the party. We regret that these individuals have shown such ingratitude to the party that gave them a platform on a platter of gold to achieve their political ambitions.”
The LP Chairman recalled resisting internal pressure to replace Akiba with another aspirant from Odukpani LGA, a decision he says played a significant role in Akiba’s emergence as a National Assembly member.
“I did my part to help him get to where he is today, and I have no regrets. Gratitude is a virtue—not a matter of wealth but of character,” Osim added.
Despite the disappointment, Osim wished the defectors well in their future political endeavors and urged party members to remain loyal, respectful, and committed to the party’s ideals. He also cautioned members against antagonizing the government, advising instead that they support all genuine efforts aimed at advancing the state.
In a related development, as part of ongoing restructuring within the party, the Labour Party announced the appointment of new local leaders. Mrs. Myra Benson and Mrs. Abigail Ekeng have been named Chairpersons for Calabar Municipality and Calabar South LGA chapters, respectively. Additionally, Mrs. Mary Okon has been appointed as the new State Women Leader.
