Investors and stakeholders affected by the controversial diversion of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway have accused the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, of disregarding a court order related to the project.
They called on the minister to comply with the existing legal directive and provide clarity on his decision to ignore a valid court ruling concerning the highway’s rerouting.
The dispute stems from the diversion of the highway to Okun Ajah in Lagos — a move that has ignited tensions between the Federal Ministry of Works and WinHomes Global Services Limited, a major investor in the area.
In response to the backlash, Umahi demanded that WinHomes’ Chief Executive Officer, Stella Ifeoma Okengwu, publicly disclose financial records of diaspora investors who reportedly contributed $250 million toward the housing project in Okun Ajah.
“There’s one Mrs. Ifeoma who goes to African restaurants in America, paying people small sums and claiming to have raised $250 million,” Umahi alleged. “If she collected that amount, those who paid her should hold her accountable, as only a gatehouse has been constructed on the land.”
In a statement, Okengwu described the minister’s comments as a deliberate distraction from the central issue — his refusal to obey the rule of law.
“The minister should focus on addressing the existing court order and explain why he continues to defy a valid legal directive,” she said. “He must also justify the unlawful diversion of the 2006 Coastal Road alignment into WinHomes property.”
She further challenged Umahi to present legal documentation authorizing the diversion, including approvals from the Presidency, the Lagos State Government, the National Assembly, or the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Okengwu emphasized that she would not be intimidated in her pursuit of justice. Despite the ongoing conflict, she reiterated her willingness to collaborate with the government — but insisted that such cooperation must be rooted in legality and fairness.
In recent months, Umahi has faced mounting criticism over the controversial diversion of the Lagos-Calabar Highway at the Okun Ajah segment.
