A Lagos magistrate court has ordered the release of Alabi Quadri, the teenager who gained nationwide attention in 2023 for standing in front of the convoy of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Quadri, who had spent several months in Kirikiri Correctional Centre, appeared before the Apapa Magistrate Court on Thursday. He was cleared of charges related to conspiracy to commit felony and armed robbery, with the court ruling that he had no case to answer.
Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi granted the release following legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who stated there was no evidence to support the allegations against the minor.
The case had originally been scheduled for hearing on April 28, 2025, but was brought forward after a joint request by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, and the DPP. The court approved the adjustment.
Effiong revealed that Quadri’s imprisonment was not tied to any serious criminal offense but was allegedly the result of lingering animosity from local thugs, popularly known as ‘area boys,’ in his neighborhood.
Quadri had become a symbol of youthful courage during the 2023 general elections after images of him standing fearlessly in front of Obi’s convoy went viral.
