The family of Argentina captain Lionel Messi has confirmed that his father, Jorge Messi, is receiving medical treatment for a health issue and is showing signs of improvement.
In a statement shared with ESPN, the family said the 68-year-old is under medical supervision and “recovering and progressing favorably within his current condition.” They stopped short of disclosing the specific nature of his illness.
The family expressed frustration over what it described as widespread misinformation, rumors, and speculation about Jorge Messi’s condition, criticizing the lack of sensitivity shown by some media outlets and individuals.
“Given the versions, rumors, and speculation that have circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep displeasure at the lack of sensitivity, respect, and scruples with which some people have treated a strictly private and family matter,” the statement read.
It stressed that only immediate family members possess accurate information and asked the public and media to refrain from spreading unverified reports. The family requested “responsibility, prudence, and compassion,” adding that health matters should not become subject to irresponsible speculation.
“We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect, and concern received,” the statement continued, “and we request that the privacy, confidentiality, and intimacy of Jorge and his entire family be respected during this process. Any relevant updates will be communicated promptly by the family.”
The news comes as Lionel Messi competes with Argentina at the ongoing World Cup in the United States. The 38-year-old forward has appeared visibly emotional during the tournament, most notably after scoring in the team’s 3-0 opening win over Algeria.
When asked about his tears, Messi said the reaction stemmed from personal difficulties unrelated to football. “I went through some difficult days,” he explained, thanking teammates and staff for their support.
Despite the off-field concerns, Messi has continued to shine on the pitch, equaling Miroslav Klose as the joint-highest scorer in men’s World Cup history and surpassing Pelé for the most goal contributions in the competition. Argentina is scheduled to face Austria in their next group stage match.
Jorge Messi has been a pivotal presence in his son’s professional life for decades, serving as his agent and overseeing business affairs from Lionel’s early years at Barcelona to his moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami. He has managed contract negotiations, image rights, and various commercial ventures, including investments in real estate, hotels, and restaurants.
In 2016, both father and son were convicted in Spain on tax-related charges but received suspended sentences and avoided prison time.
The Messi family concluded their statement by thanking well-wishers while reiterating their call for privacy as Jorge continues his recovery.
