The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s instruction to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reverse the freezing of Osun State government accounts, describing it as a “panicky and belated afterthought.”
In a joint statement signed by Minority Leader Hon. Fredrick Agbedi and Caucus spokesman Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmakers said the directive exposed contradictions within the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government. They alleged the move formed part of an attempt to intimidate the Osun State Government ahead of the weekend’s governorship election.
According to the Caucus, Tinubu’s order for the EFCC to withdraw the freeze came only after widespread public criticism, rather than from a genuine commitment to the rule of law. The lawmakers characterised the episode as evidence of a “Government At War With Itself,” pointing to conflicting public statements from the President and the anti-graft agency.
They highlighted remarks by EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren, who stated on national television that the accounts were frozen without a valid court order. Later the same Thursday afternoon, however, a statement from the President directed the EFCC to approach the court to vacate the order.
The Caucus questioned the apparent inconsistency, asking whether a court order had existed and whether the President was fully aware of the actions taken by officials appointed under his administration. They further asked if he had lost control of what they described as an “army of sycophants” acting as though they were above the people.
