The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has identified Eziukwu Market, also known as Cemetery Market, in Aba, Abia State, as a major hub for the production and distribution of counterfeit and substandard products.
This revelation comes after a recent operation led by NAFDAC’s South-East Zone Director, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, on Tuesday. Iluyomade described the market as a center for the mass production and circulation of fake goods, likening it to “weapons of mass destruction.”
Despite previous crackdowns, including a major operation in December 2023, illegal activities continue to thrive in the market. Iluyomade expressed his disbelief at the persistence of individuals who continue to prioritize profit over the safety of their fellow citizens. He also noted the agency’s frustration with ongoing illicit practices, despite an agreement signed by market leadership during the last operation, promising to identify and expose those involved in counterfeit production and distribution.
However, Iluyomade stated that the market’s leaders now face “serious questions” regarding the continued illegal activities in their jurisdiction.
Disturbing Findings
One of the most troubling discoveries from the operation was the re-validation of expired products. “The volume of expired products being re-validated was deeply troubling,” Iluyomade remarked.
Consumers are urged to exercise caution when purchasing goods to avoid exposing themselves to potential health risks. The raid uncovered a variety of fake and adulterated products, including wines, whiskey, yogurt, carbonated drinks, chips, dry gin, and other beverages. These products were found to be produced in unsanitary conditions or stored in sections where expired items were being relabeled with new dates.
In light of these alarming findings, NAFDAC has reiterated its commitment to identifying and prosecuting those responsible for these illegal activities, as part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard public health. “We will continue our efforts to hold those responsible accountable,” Iluyomade concluded.
Additional NAFDAC Actions
In another significant development, NAFDAC recently destroyed 828 cartons of Bioflex infusions supplied by Biomedical Company Limited, Ilorin, after they failed sterility tests. This action followed a complaint from Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Shika, which reported suspended particles in the infusions. Laboratory analysis confirmed contamination, leading to the destruction of the products.
Earlier, NAFDAC also flagged the illegal sale of ZACEF-TZ Injection, an unregistered brand of Ceftriaxone Sodium Injection, in Abuja.
