The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted 4,173.5 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, valued at more than ₦10.4 billion at the Tin Can Island Port in one of its largest drug busts of 2026.
According to the agency, the operation followed several weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated surveillance involving security agencies from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.
NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said the shipment departed Toronto, Canada, on March 28, 2026, before being transported by rail to Montreal and shipped to Morocco. The cargo was later transferred to another vessel at Tanger Med Port and eventually arrived in Lagos on May 9.
Babafemi explained that NDLEA’s Marine Intelligence Unit and the Tincan Island Strategic Command tracked the container for more than two months in partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, the UK Home Office International Operations, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
A joint inspection conducted on May 12 uncovered the drugs hidden inside two used vehicles — a Ford bus and a Mercedes-Benz C300 — loaded within the container.
The latest seizure comes shortly after NDLEA operatives raided a luxury residence in Lekki, Lagos, where 2,326 kilograms of the same substance, packaged in 4,000 parcels and valued at over ₦5.8 billion, were recovered.
Officials said the consecutive discoveries indicate increasing efforts by international drug trafficking syndicates to channel synthetic cannabis into Nigeria through seaports and urban distribution networks.
NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa praised the operatives involved, saying the successful operation demonstrates stronger collaboration among domestic and international security agencies.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and prosecuting those responsible.
The NDLEA Director of Seaports Operations, Ibinabo Archie-Abia, stated that the interception highlights the value of intelligence-driven policing and cooperation between agencies in combating transnational organised crime.
Investigations are ongoing to identify both local and foreign suspects connected to the shipment and dismantle the broader trafficking network behind it.
