Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to stronger bilateral cooperation on security, counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and regional stability following a series of high-level meetings in Washington involving Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and top US officials.
Ribadu visited the United States from May 4 to May 6, where he held discussions with J. D. Vance, Marco Rubio, Allison Hooker, and Daniel Zimmerim.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the talks centred on expanding cooperation in defence, intelligence, regional security, economic resilience, and democratic governance.
During the meetings, Ribadu conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s long-standing strategic ties with the United States. He stressed the need for sustained collaboration in combating terrorism, violent extremism, organised crime, and cyber threats across West Africa and the Sahel.
Ribadu also highlighted Nigeria’s frontline role in counterterrorism operations in the Lake Chad Basin and across the wider West African region, while reaffirming the country’s dedication to peace, democratic governance, and economic development in Africa.
Both countries discussed the worsening security situation in the Sahel and agreed on the importance of stronger regional cooperation to address growing asymmetric threats.
In talks at the US Department of State, Ribadu thanked the American government for continued support in intelligence sharing, security assistance, defence capacity building, and humanitarian interventions. He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to implementing agreements under the Nigeria-US Joint Working Group framework.
The two sides reviewed progress made under the Joint Working Group and explored ways to expand military cooperation, border security efforts, strategic communication, and institutional development.
Ribadu further briefed US officials on the Nigerian government’s ongoing security reforms and operational strategies aimed at restoring stability in affected communities. He explained that the Tinubu administration’s approach combines military action with community engagement, economic development, deradicalisation initiatives, and regional partnerships.
US officials commended Nigeria’s leadership in regional peace and security efforts and described the country as a key strategic partner in Africa. Both nations concluded the meetings by pledging to deepen diplomatic engagement, strengthen defence collaboration, and ensure effective implementation of agreements reached under the Joint Working Group.
