The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has called on party members to speak out boldly against the current state of the nation, stressing that Nigeria is in urgent need of rescue.
Obi made the remarks on Tuesday during the ongoing National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Labour Party held in Abuja.
“Do not fear anybody. Those who were afraid yesterday didn’t achieve anything better,” Obi said. “We must raise our voices when things are going wrong. Nigeria is collapsing. The facts are clear, the economic indicators are visible—people are getting poorer by the day.”
The former Governor of Anambra State also emphasized the importance of unity and inclusivity within the Labour Party.
“The Labour Party has chosen to operate as one united family, and we must uphold that. It’s not about Peter Obi’s preferences—it’s about the collective will of everyone. No one is excluded from this family. We’re building a party grounded in fairness and justice.”
Looking ahead to the next election cycle, Obi underscored the need for the party to be fully prepared and to present credible candidates across all levels of government.
“We want to go into the next elections ready—fielding the best and most competent candidates for the House of Representatives, Senate, Governorship, and the Presidency.”
He also stressed the importance of party loyalty and competence in choosing candidates, noting that past mistakes must be avoided.
“Anyone who wishes to contest under the Labour Party must be a dedicated and active member—not just someone using the party as a platform. Competence is non-negotiable,” he added.
