Nigeria is set to transform its border management by moving away from traditional manpower-based patrols to a sophisticated, technology-driven Smart Border Management System (SBMS) powered by drones, artificial intelligence, and real-time intelligence sharing.
The initiative was highlighted in a proposal presented by Rear Admiral S.S. Lassa (rtd) at the National Boundary Commission’s High-Level National Workshop on “Border Security, Resilience and Cross-Border Cooperation” held in Abuja.
Citing the Broken Windows Theory, Lassa warned that porous and poorly monitored border areas create fertile ground for serious crimes, including smuggling, terrorism, arms trafficking, and irregular migration.
Nigeria’s borders span over 4,454 kilometres of land frontiers with Benin, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, in addition to a vast maritime domain. While the country has 364 approved international border control points, an estimated 1,497 illegal and unmanned routes are currently being exploited by criminal networks.
“Conventional border patrols and checkpoints alone can no longer cope with emerging threats,” Lassa said. He advocated the deployment of advanced drone systems equipped with thermal cameras, radar, LiDAR, and other intelligence sensors for persistent surveillance.
The proposed Smart Border Management System will integrate drones, satellites, biometrics, artificial intelligence, geospatial mapping, and centralised command centres to significantly enhance threat detection and rapid response capabilities.
Lassa also recommended the establishment of a National Border Data Fusion and Intelligence Centre to harmonise information flow among key agencies, including immigration, customs, the military, police, and intelligence services.
The move signals a strategic shift towards leveraging cutting-edge technology to secure Nigeria’s borders more effectively and curb transnational criminal activities.
