The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Friday claimed that the predictions made by its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, regarding the alleged Fulani incursion into Nigerian communities have come to pass.
In a statement signed by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described Kanu as a “prophet” whose warnings were dismissed but are now being fulfilled.
According to IPOB, Kanu had in 2014 stated on Radio Biafra that “Fulani terrorists will take control of Nigeria, and the government will remain inactive,” a statement the group now says reflects the present state of insecurity in the country.
The group further recalled that in 2016, Kanu predicted that Bola Ahmed Tinubu would succeed former President Muhammadu Buhari, a claim made before Tinubu declared interest in the presidency.
“His statements regarding the Fulanisation agenda, which received significant backing during Buhari’s administration, have now materialised,” IPOB stated.
IPOB claimed that Kanu’s warnings about a violent takeover by Fulani militants were widely ignored, but are now visible through widespread insecurity across Nigerian regions. The statement also alleged that security forces have failed to act decisively to protect citizens from such attacks.
The group accused the Fulani of historical and strategic land grabs, citing past incidents involving the Hausa and Yoruba communities. It referred to the story of Afonja, a Yoruba leader allegedly betrayed by Fulani allies, leading to the control of parts of the region, including present-day Kwara State.
“Currently, every corner of Nigeria is under assault by Fulani terrorists, with no visible intervention from the military, DSS, or police,” the group claimed. “Nigerians are watching as these elements take control of many regions.”
IPOB further asserted that Kanu’s continued detention since his rendition in 2021 is a result of his consistent advocacy against these issues. The group reiterated its call for the restructuring or dissolution of Nigeria, arguing that the amalgamation of diverse ethnic groups by the British in 1914 has failed.
“As Mazi Nnamdi Kanu proposed, the only lasting solution to Nigeria’s insecurity and political crisis is the renegotiation of the expired British amalgamation agreement. Each indigenous group should be allowed to establish its independent nation,” the statement read.
The group also referred to remarks allegedly made by former Defence Chief Theophilus Danjuma and a recent DSS comment, encouraging citizens to defend themselves against terrorists due to inadequate protection by security forces.
IPOB concluded by demanding Kanu’s unconditional release and called on the Igbo community to acknowledge his efforts and sacrifices.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not Nigeria’s problem. He and IPOB are the solution,” the statement said. “The time has come for indigenous Nigerians to rise and resist the Fulani terrorists. They must be driven back to their origins.”
