The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has denounced the scheduled trial of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, labelling it as a clear violation of the Nigerian Constitution and the principles of justice.
Kanu is expected to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, with Justice James Omotosho presiding over the case. He is facing terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Nigerian government.
In a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB described the trial as a “sham” and a “judicial travesty,” calling on the international community—including the United Nations, African Union, and European Union—as well as global human rights organisations, to intervene.
“This trial is not only a gross violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also a flagrant breach of international law, an act of judicial terrorism, and a mockery of natural justice,” the statement read.
IPOB urged all advocates of justice and democracy, both in Nigeria and globally, to speak out against what it called an assault on due process.
“To the justices presiding over this case, we urge you to consider the weight of your decisions. History will not be kind to those who use the instruments of justice to perpetuate injustice,” Powerful said.
He further warned that the Nigerian judiciary must resist becoming a tool for political oppression, emphasizing that the rule of law is fundamental to a civilized society.
IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to seeking the release of Nnamdi Kanu through peaceful and lawful means, vowing not to back down in its pursuit of self-determination.
“We will not be intimidated, and we will not relent. The light of truth and justice will prevail over the darkness of oppression,” the group stated.
