The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has insisted that President Bola Tinubu does not maintain an extravagant lifestyle despite the privileges of his office.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, Adedeji addressed public concerns over the spending habits of political office holders amid economic hardship. He described the President as frugal in his personal routines.
According to Adedeji, Tinubu regularly walks from his residence to his office and only uses a vehicle when travelling to the airport. He also claimed the President eats just once a day and has not travelled outside Nigeria in the past three months.
“Mr President goes from home to office on foot, not even driving except when he is going to the airport. I don’t know where you see the convoy,” Adedeji said. He added that Tinubu remains focused on official duties, often reviewing documents rather than attending social events.
Responding to reports about luxury vehicles, including Escalades, in the presidential convoy, the NRS boss dismissed the criticism. “How much is an Escalade that the president of Nigeria cannot afford? Please don’t embarrass this country,” he stated.
Adedeji further questioned the notion of a lavish lifestyle, noting the President’s limited public appearances. “What is living large? In the last months, he has not even left the shores of this country, trekking and working… The president eats once in a day. How many parties have you seen him at in the last three years?” he asked.
The comments come as Nigerians continue to grapple with economic pressures, with scrutiny intensifying over government expenditure and the conduct of public officials.
