Former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has denied reports suggesting he plans to defect from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former senator reacted to a recent viral post in which he was quoted as describing the APC as “a party desperate to hijack power.” In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha dismissed the quote as false and mischievous.
He described the publication as a deliberate attempt by political opponents threatened by his influence to malign his reputation.
“Nearly eight years after leaving office as Imo State Governor and years after representing Imo West in the Senate, some people still seem troubled by the name Rochas Okorocha,” the statement read in part. “They have now fabricated a quote, circulating on social media, falsely attributing it to me.”
The alleged quote reads: “APC is no longer a political party but a party desperate to hijack power at all costs. I am at the corner looking at them — Senator Rochas Okorocha.”
Okorocha firmly rejected the statement, questioning how he could malign a party he helped establish.
“It is laughable to suggest that I would accuse a party that has been in power since 2015 of being desperate for power. What power again?” he asked.
Highlighting his role in the formation of the APC, Okorocha reminded critics that he was the only sitting governor from the South-East who joined the party at its inception, risking his political future in the process.
“At a time when the APC had little support in the region, I took a stand. Despite ridicule and resistance, I remained committed,” he said.
The statement also recalled that his contributions earned him the respect of fellow governors, who unanimously elected him as the pioneer Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.
Okorocha further stated that if he had concerns about the party, he would raise them publicly and responsibly, not through anonymous and poorly written social media posts.
