The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has refuted claims by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo that ex-military President Ibrahim Babangida was one of Tinubu’s tormentors.
Osinbajo made the remark last week while reviewing Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, at its public presentation in Abuja. He recalled how Tinubu, then a senator, opposed the military’s dissolution of the Senate following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. In a lighthearted comment, Osinbajo suggested that Tinubu, who was once tormented by the military, including Babangida was now honoring one of his former adversaries.
However, speaking on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, Onanuga argued that Osinbajo’s characterization was inaccurate. He stated that Babangida was actually an inspiration for Tinubu’s political career.
“I think the former Vice President got it wrong. Babangida was not really a tormentor of President Tinubu. In fact, President Tinubu himself acknowledged in his speech that he holds Babangida in high regard and that Babangida inspired him to enter politics,” Onanuga said.
He explained that Babangida’s push for a new-breed politicians encouraged professionals like Tinubu, who was then a technocrat, to join politics.
Onanuga clarified that Tinubu’s real challenges began under General Sani Abacha when he and other politicians attempted to reconvene the dissolved Senate in Lagos.
He also commended Babangida’s acknowledgment that MKO Abiola won the 1993 presidential election but noted that the admission came too late.
