Doctors at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, and its Akure Annex have commenced a 72-hour warning strike following the alleged assault of a colleague by a patient’s relatives.
The industrial action was initiated by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), FMC Owo, after a doctor on duty was physically assaulted on Sunday while attending to patients.
According to reports, the wife of a patient, accompanied by her daughter, attacked the doctor. Subsequently, some individuals stormed the hospital premises in search of the doctor, forcing hospital staff to hide him in a secure location for his safety.
In a communiqué signed by the association’s President, Dr. Adeola Oluwadamilola, and Secretary-General, Dr. Dare Aderemi, the ARD described the incident as part of a rising trend of violence against healthcare workers. They noted that this was the second recorded attack on a doctor at the institution in 2026.
The doctors have issued several demands, including Immediate arrest and prosecution of the assailants, deployment of armed security personnel to FMC Owo and its annexes, a public apology from the assailants published in a national newspaper, adequate compensation for the victimised doctor.
