Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has accused former military Head of State, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), and the late Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), Humphrey Nwosu, of deceiving the 18 million Nigerians who voted in the annulled 1993 presidential election.
Speaking on the Senate floor on Thursday, Oshiomhole opposed a motion by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to immortalize Nwosu, arguing that he failed to acknowledge or confess his role in the controversial election.
“Prof. Nwosu and IBB fooled 18 million Nigerians who cast their votes. If he was afraid of the gun because we were under dictatorship, there were still Nigerians who stood up against oppression despite the risks,” Oshiomhole stated.
He criticized Nwosu for never publicly admitting that MKO Abiola won the election, even after Nigeria transitioned to democracy.
“I would have expected Nwosu, at any point in his life, to say, ‘Now that democracy has prevailed and there is freedom of speech, I can reveal the truth—Abiola won, but I couldn’t announce it,’” Oshiomhole said.
He concluded that since Nwosu never made such a confession before his death, he should not be honored.
