Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has signed into law the repeal of the Abia State Estate Development Agency (ABSEDA), officially dissolving the agency.
The Governor also signed the Abia State Senior Citizens Law, along with 17 other bills, during an expanded Executive Council meeting held on Monday with members of the State House of Assembly.
The newly signed Abia State Senior Citizens Law 2025 aims to provide care and support for residents aged 60 and above, ensuring their welfare and inclusion in state policy planning.
Governor Otti noted that the newly enacted laws reflect the aspirations of Abians as captured in his manifesto, and align with recommendations from the 2023 Transition Committee Report. He expressed appreciation to the lawmakers for their collaboration and support.
Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the laws as “abstract but impactful,” noting that several of them are amendments to existing legislation.
Among the notable laws signed were:
- Abia State Senior Citizens Law 2025
- Abia State Road Maintenance Agency (Repeal) Law 2025
- Abia State Estate Development Agency (Repeal) Law 2025
- Abia State Orientation Agency (Amendment) Law 2025
Providing further clarification, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, said that some agencies affected by the repealed laws will now function under respective ministries, particularly the Ministry of Lands and Housing. This restructuring removes them from the direct oversight of the Governor’s Office.
Uwanna added that with the new additions, the total number of laws signed by the current administration has risen to 30.
