The Senior Pastor of The Second Coming of Christ Ministry, Adewale Giwa, has criticized former Military Head of State General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) for admitting that MKO Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election without apologizing to Nigerians for its annulment.
Speaking on Adaba FM in Akure, Ondo State, on Friday, Pastor Giwa said Babangida’s confession came too late, adding that it is meaningless since Abiola can no longer reclaim his mandate.
“IBB only confessed his sin but never asked Nigerians for forgiveness. It’s unfortunate that most of our political leaders don’t think about the legacies they leave behind”.
“They focus only on personal interests, forgetting that we all leave this world with nothing. On Judgment Day, God will demand an account of their stewardship,” he said.
During the launch of his memoir, A Journey in Service, in Abuja, Babangida openly admitted that Abiola won the election, which he described as free, fair, and credible.
However, he defended his decision to annul the election, claiming that “forces pretending to be friends” would have assassinated Abiola if he had been declared the winner.
Pastor Giwa dismissed this explanation, insisting that Babangida had the power and opportunity to declare Abiola president but chose not to.
“The confession of IBB is coming after 31 years, why now? What could have stopped him from speaking earlier?
“If he has now admitted that Abiola won, how does he explain the events that led to Abiola’s arrest, imprisonment, and eventual death? What about his wife, Kudirat Abiola, who was also killed while fighting for his mandate?”
The clergyman further stated that those responsible for the June 12 annulment must answer for their actions, questioning why people were killed simply to hold onto power.
“Why should you kill just to remain in power? Those who live by the sword will die by the sword. History will judge everyone accordingly, and a nation that forgets its past has no future.
”If I had been present at the event, I would have walked out immediately after Babangida made that statement.”
Babangida’s memoir has reignited debates over the controversial annulment of Nigeria’s most historic election, leaving many wondering why it took over three decades for him to acknowledge the truth and whether justice will ever be served.
