The embattled National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has vowed never to abandon his ally, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, despite mounting pressure from within the party.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Anyanwu criticized Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Peter Mbah of Enugu State, questioning their push for his removal from office and asking what wrongdoing he had committed to warrant such actions.
Anyanwu has been locked in a leadership tussle with Sunday Ude-Okoye over who legitimately holds the office of PDP National Secretary. The dispute intensified in December 2024 when the Southeast PDP Caucus endorsed Ude-Okoye as Anyanwu’s replacement, following Anyanwu’s unsuccessful bid for the Imo State governorship.
Although the Court of Appeal recognized Ude-Okoye as the rightful National Secretary—a decision accepted by PDP governors, the Board of Trustees, and the National Working Committee—Anyanwu, with Wike’s backing, challenged the verdict at the Supreme Court.
On March 21, the Supreme Court ruled in Anyanwu’s favor, asserting that internal party disputes fall outside the jurisdiction of the judiciary.
Reaffirming his loyalty to Wike, Anyanwu said:
“What exactly has Governor Makinde accused me of? Have I insulted him or caused him stress? What is my offence? I see him as a friend.
“Some people have ambitions—whether to be president or governor—but how does my position threaten that? My tenure ends in December. The primaries are in 2026 and elections in 2027. I won’t even be in office by then.
“The FCT Minister is my friend and boss. No amount of pressure will make me turn my back on him. I will never deny my friend just because of politics. After public office, life continues.”
He urged unity within the party’s leadership, emphasizing the need for a peaceful transition.
“I always remind my colleagues in the National Working Committee: we came here as a united family; let’s leave the same way. We’ve been here for over three years—just four months left. Let’s finish well and part in peace.
“Why the division now? Some label me ‘pro-Wike’—so what? Everyone knows his contribution to this party. When it mattered most, he stood strong for the PDP.”
