The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate reinstatement of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of orchestrating a cover-up.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on Thursday following the Senate’s adoption of a report by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. The resolution bars her from all legislative activities for six months, effective March 6, 2025.
In a statement, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba condemned the suspension as a violation of parliamentary conventions and fair hearing. The party argued that the decision effectively strips the people of Kogi Central of their right to representation.
The PDP further criticized Akpabio for presiding over the matter despite being personally implicated in allegations raised by Akpoti-Uduaghan.
“The PDP asserts that the action of the Akpabio-led Senate leadership against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan smacks of desperation to cover up,” the statement read.
The party also condemned the “hasty suspension” of the senator without an open investigation into her allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio. It warned that the move undermines the Senate’s credibility and signals an attempt to shield wrongdoing.
The PDP demanded that Akpabio step aside to allow an impartial investigation into the allegations, insisting that due process and transparency must be upheld.
