The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned recent remarks by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who claimed that there is no political opposition in the state.
In a statement signed by the PDP State Chairman, Mr. Onyemaechi Nwele, the party described Umahi’s comments as “deceitful” and “misleading,” insisting that the PDP remains a vibrant and strategic opposition force in Ebonyi.
“I feel compelled to address recent pronouncements by Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, former governor of Ebonyi State and current Minister of Works,” Nwele stated.
“Senator Umahi claimed there is no political opposition in the state, suggesting that the ruling APC enjoys a smooth ride due to defections from other parties. This assertion is not only false but a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.”
Nwele stressed that the PDP maintains a clear vision and robust strategy aimed at reclaiming its position in the state, including winning back the governorship and securing legislative majority through democratic means.
He further alleged that Umahi’s comments were politically motivated and linked to his personal interests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“His sudden overtures to the incumbent governor, Francis Nwifuru, suggest an attempt to safeguard his political ambitions, particularly in light of uncertain prospects at the federal level under the Tinubu administration. It’s evident that he’s positioning himself for potential opportunities, possibly a return to the Senate,” the PDP chairman said.
Nwele urged party members and the public to disregard Umahi’s remarks, reaffirming the PDP’s determination to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
