The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has suffered yet another setback as Collins Ugochukwu, the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North in the State House of Assembly, officially defected to the Labour Party (LP) on Wednesday.
Ugochukwu announced his defection in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa. The Speaker read the letter during the Assembly’s plenary session, confirming Ugochukwu’s move to LP.
His defection marks the third major loss for the PDP in recent months. Just last week, Lucky Nweke Johnson, the lawmaker representing Isuikwuato, left the party for LP, citing internal crises and his confidence in Governor Alex Otti’s administration. In February, Rowland Dennis, who represents Isiala Ngwa South, also dumped the PDP for LP.
With Isiala Ngwa North being one of Abia’s most influential local government areas in determining gubernatorial election outcomes, Ugochukwu’s departure could significantly impact PDP’s chances in the 2027 polls.
