Presidential candidate Peter Obi on Tuesday described as “totally unacceptable” the alleged obstruction of his convoy in Benue State, where he had travelled to offer condolences to communities hit by recent killings.
Obi, the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said his team was prevented from reaching the area he intended to visit. The convoy was stopped along Boko Road near the Air Force Base shortly after arriving in the state.
Speaking at the scene, Obi said he had been told that youths allegedly sponsored by the state governor had blocked the road. “I am here in a place where people have been killed. I am here to commiserate with them, but now I have been told that youths sponsored by the governor have blocked the road and made sure I do not go in,” he stated.
He remained at the location for some time and criticised the situation: “I have been standing here since. We cannot have a country like this. It does not make sense to me. The rascality is totally unacceptable.”
Obi expressed concern about ongoing violence in Benue, noting that people seeking to show solidarity with affected communities should be allowed access. “People are being killed every day in Benue. People want to condole them and show that they are with them. I came here only to be told we cannot go in,” he said. The Benue State Government had not responded to the allegations at the time of the report.
Obi’s visit was aimed at supporting communities affected by recent killings in the state. The incident involved what he described as suspected political thugs and security operatives.
